BENTWOOD CHAIR
CH81B-P
——
DESIGN
Josef Hoffmann , 1930
Designed in 1930 by the Austrian master designer Josef Hoffmann for Thonet, it is now produced by the Czech brand TON. Continuing Thonet’s core steam-bent solid wood craftsmanship, the chair features a beechwood frame curved into a fluid arc, while incorporating Hoffmann’s signature geometric aesthetics. Widely used in Prague’s cafés and restaurants, it is also known as the “Prague Chair.” It stands as the pinnacle of 20th-century bentwood furniture, perfectly fusing the curves of the Art Nouveau movement with the geometric rationality of Modernism. Still produced and reissued worldwide today, it is held in the collections of numerous museums and remains an iconic design symbol spanning nearly a century.
