DESIGN

a derivative of the Sonett / TON style

This is the Retro Moon Bay Bentwood Dining Chair. (Also known as the Crescent-Back Bentwood Chair, it is a derivative of the Sonett / TON style.) It is a modern retro reissue of classic bentwood furniture, continuing the Sonett family’s steam-bending craftsmanship while incorporating a crescent-shaped backrest design that better conforms to the human body. This is not an original TON model, but rather a modern manufacturer’s retro-inspired innovation in bentwood craftsmanship. While retaining the core steam-bending technology, the backrest has been redesigned into a crescent shape that better suits contemporary aesthetics. Compared to the TON 14/18 chairs, its backrest offers a more enveloping feel, with a style leaning toward warm, rustic vintage rather than the elegant, airy vibe of a Viennese café.

Core Craftsmanship

Utilizing Sonet’s signature steam-bent solid wood technique, beech and elm wood is softened and bent into smooth, curved chair legs and crossbars, ensuring structural stability while maintaining a visually lightweight appearance.

The iconic crescent-shaped (Moon Bay) solid wood backrest features a curve that contours to the lower back and spine, offering greater envelopment and support compared to traditional double-ring backrests, ensuring comfort during extended sitting.

Four slightly flared curved legs provide stable support, while a ring-shaped crossbar reinforces the frame. The solid wood seat is flat and durable. With no unnecessary embellishments, the design embodies a minimalist, vintage aesthetic.

Categorized as vintage French, American country, or mid-century modern. The deep walnut finish (as shown) and warm wood texture make it a perfect fit for cafes, Western-style restaurants, vintage eateries, and home dining spaces.

Ideal for commercial spaces (cafés, bars, bed-and-breakfasts) as well as home dining chairs or desk chairs, balancing aesthetics with practicality.

In addition to the solid wood seat, a rattan seat version is available, offering better breathability and a more airy visual appeal.
