BENTWOOD CHAIR

CH30B-P

——

DESIGN

Michael Thonet , 1869

Designed by Michael Thonet in 1869 and later refined by August Thonet, this chair is now produced by the Czech brand TON. Continuing Thonet’s core technique of steam-bending solid wood, the chair features a single piece of beech wood that is softened and bent into a seamless, integrated structure comprising the backrest and armrests, representing the pinnacle of bentwood craftsmanship. Le Corbusier featured it extensively in his iconic architectural works, such as the Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau in Paris (1925) and the Weissenhof Housing Estate (1927), establishing it as an icon of modernist design. It serves as a bridge between bentwood furniture and modernist design, demonstrating that traditional craftsmanship can meet modern functional and aesthetic demands. Still produced and reissued worldwide today, this classic design has spanned over 150 years and is held in the collections of numerous museums.

One-Piece Molding Aesthetics

The backrest and armrests are crafted from a single piece of bent wood. The fluid, circular lines ensure structural strength while creating a sculptural, airy feel.

Compared to the armless version, the curved armrests provide effective support for the elbows, and the arched backrest conforms to the natural curve of the spine, making it more comfortable for extended sitting. Ideal for settings such as dining rooms and home offices.

Free of unnecessary embellishments, the design features a clean, efficient structure. It can be disassembled for flat-pack shipping, combining aesthetic appeal with the practicality of industrial production.

The classic curved silhouette seamlessly integrates into a variety of spaces, including vintage, Scandinavian, and industrial styles, while the matte black version exudes modern minimalism.

Steam-bent beech wood, with the entire piece bent as a single unit to avoid joints, ensuring the chair’s durability and stability.

Available in rattan (breathable and lightweight), solid wood laminate (as shown in the image), and upholstered options to suit various needs.

The image shows a matte black finish; other classic color options include natural wood and walnut, allowing you to choose based on your space’s style.
