BENTWOOD CHAIR

CH56A-P

DESIGN

A derivative of the Sonnet No. 14 chair

In 1859, it was designed by German carpenter Michael Thonet. After nearly 20 years of research and development, Thonet perfected a technique for steam-bending solid wood, softening beech wood and shaping it into smooth curves, thereby achieving a harmonious blend of elegant design and industrial mass production. Between 1859 and 1930, global sales exceeded 50 million units, making it the world’s first chair to achieve true large-scale industrial production. A pioneer of modern industrial design, it directly influenced modern design movements such as the Bauhaus school and laid the groundwork for the mass production of subsequent steel-tube and plastic chairs. Still produced and reissued worldwide today, it is widely used in homes, cafés, and restaurants, standing as a timeless design icon that transcends eras.

Ergonomic Support

The crescent-shaped top rail conforms to the shoulders and neck, while the radial fan-shaped slats extend upward from the seat. This design provides even support for the back while creating a sense of visual openness, avoiding a heavy or bulky appearance.

The smooth, curved chair legs and circular crossbar ensure stability, while the radial lines of the fan-shaped backrest break away from the monotonous curves of traditional bentwood chairs, combining rational structure with artistic beauty.

Free of unnecessary embellishments, the simple and durable structure is ideal for high-frequency use; the stackable design (available in select versions) facilitates storage, making it suitable for both commercial spaces and home use.

With its warm wood tones and vintage lines, this chair seamlessly integrates into French vintage, American country, and mid-century modern spaces, making it a classic dining chair that combines practicality with decorative appeal.

Utilizing Sonet’s signature steam-bent solid wood technique, beech or elm wood is softened by high-temperature steam and then hand-bent into curved legs and circular crossbars, ensuring structural strength and fluid curves.

rame: Primarily made of beech wood, which is hard, has a fine grain, and offers excellent bending resistance, making it an ideal material for bentwood craftsmanship. Seat: Solid wood laminate (as shown) or rattan seat; the former is flat and durable, while the latter is breathable and lightweight. Backrest: Fan-shaped slats are made of solid wood strips, and the top rail is curved solid wood, creating a structurally stable yet visually lightweight design.

Typically features vintage finishes such as dark walnut or brown, which preserve the wood grain and create a warm, retro atmosphere; modern color options including black and white are also available.
